The British Army clasp knife is one of the most recognized military utility blades in the world — a pattern carried by generations of British soldiers, a study in restraint. Three tools, and no more: a sheepsfoot blade, a can opener, and an integrated screwdriver tip. The brushed stainless-steel body will take a battlefield's worth of abuse. The handle is stamped "The Genuine British Army Knife," and the claim is well-earned: it's the genuine Army-issue pattern, still made in Sheffield.

What we like most about this knife is what's not there. No saw, no awl, no tweezers, no toothpick — the basics, executed correctly. The sheepsfoot blade is a deliberate choice: a straight cutting edge with a blunt tip, designed to do real utility work — rope, cordage, food, parcels — without the risk of accidental piercing that a pointed blade carries. The handle is brushed stainless, an honest material with no organic parts to crack, swell, or absorb moisture. Made in England.

Wostenholm is one of the foundational names in English cutlery. The family had been making knives in the villages outside Sheffield since the mid-1700s — George Wolstenholme, born in 1717, is the earliest known cutler in the line — and shortened the name to Wostenholm around 1815. In 1826, a third-generation George Wostenholm registered the IXL trademark, a phonetic play on "I excel," and went on to build the firm into one of the largest cutlers in Sheffield during the city's 19th-century dominance of the global cutlery trade. At its peak in the 1850s the company employed over 800 craftsmen, and IXL knives became as familiar in American hardware stores as in British ones.
