The brass anchor set into the hardwood handle speaks volumes. The form was developed by working seamen who needed a small, reliable tool for everyday use at sea, and who carried the anchor as a symbol of hope. We've kept the Anchor Knife in our rotation for many years because the proportions are right, the silhouette is quietly elegant, and it's hand-crafted in Solingen, Germany.

The stainless blade is a deliberate choice, and the right one for a knife designed to be near salt water. The shape is sheepsfoot: a straight cutting edge with a blunt, rounded tip, well-suited to draw cuts and the kind of utility work that has to happen in close quarters. Everything else is as it should be — sapele handle, brass rivets, brass anchor inlay, slip joint.

A knife with deep nautical roots, that will serve as well on land as it does at sea.

Otter-Messer has manufactured knives in Solingen since 1840, when the Berns brothers established production in a watermill. The company maintains handcrafted methods developed across five generations of continuous output, sharpening and finishing each blade through processes refined over 180 years of German knifemaking tradition.

Wipe the blade and handle dry after exposure to water — especially salt water — paying particular attention to the pivot. An occasional light coat of mineral oil or wood wax will keep the sapele from drying out, and a drop of machine oil at the pivot will keep the slip joint moving freely.
